STOMMPY IMPACT PROTECTION BECOMES "SMART" WITH INNOVATIVE "S.M.A.R.T." TECHNOLOGY
STOMMPY
a 100% Made in Italy company, leader in the production of Shock Protection for industrial use - presents the innovative S.M.A.R.T. (Safety Monitoring & Active Reporting Technology) system: the "smart" Shock Protection equipped with IoT (Internet of Things) technology, capable of constantly communicating, through a special App, its position within the plant, the state of efficiency and the level of severity of an impact suffered. A state-of-the-art solution, which will be previewed at Mecspe 2020 and is a valuable ally for Company Managers who want to make Security a valuable strategic asset.
Marco Chiarini, president of STOMMPY, explains its features, advantages and potential.
How did the new S.M.A.R.T. technology come about?
The S.M.A.R.T. technology was born from an almost natural intuition: we pooled our current experience to define the UNI standards that will regulate the sector in which we operate and what is developing in other areas on the wave of IoT technologies.
In this sense, we considered that if our Shock Protection was able to transmit in real time its state of operation and, therefore, the level of efficiency, it would be easier for the RSPP to always have a situation under control. An approach that will acquire even greater relevance with the entry into force of the two UNI 1605398 and UNI 1604054 standards.
The latter will have the dual objective of regulating, on the one hand, the test criteria for Impact Protectors and the identifying parameters to be communicated to the market by manufacturers and, on the other, their correct selection and application in the company by RSPPs, who will be in charge of monitoring their proper functioning on a par with all other active or passive safety devices.
What specifically does the S.M.A.R.T. system consist of and what does it allow us to detect?
The new S.M.A.R.T. system makes a very important evolutionary leap for STOMMPY Impact Guards, until now considered passive "off-line" safety devices. It must be understood that within companies the monitoring of the state of efficiency of the Shock Protections is now entrusted exclusively to the visual control of the persons in charge, with the result that, all too often, those affected and damaged by moving trolleys remain in a condition of poor or even total lack of efficiency for longer or shorter periods. In the event, which is also statistically high, that a trolley impacts an already hit and damaged Impact Protection, its ultimate collapse would be very likely to occur, with a significant increase in the risk of the trolley damaging the company's asset or, even worse, causing a personal injury.
In this scenario, STOMMPY intervenes by transforming its Shock Protectors, bringing them "on-line," thus able to interact with the same company managers in charge, to communicate to them in real-time any impact of a trolley against one of them, also indicating the degree of residual efficiency of the protection and the recommended action to be carried out in terms of maintenance. To do this, a sensor was installed, embedded in a special watertight capsule firmly positioned inside the top cap of our Shockproof Poles, which is also watertight. A complete 4.0 security system, therefore, realized while maintaining the performance characteristics of STOMMPY Shock Protectors, which are distinguished by their construction and anchoring materials, patented and certified according to the highest quality standards. With respect to their operation, the innovative S.M.A.R.T. Shock Protectors are able, in case of impact, to record and transmit in real-time the change of position assumed, after the impact with the vehicle, to the dedicated App available to the Customer. Thanks to the simple and intuitive interface, the User will be able to view live, remotely, directly from Smartphone, Tablet or PC numerous pieces of information: the Collision Protection that was hit (thanks to its precise mapping reported on the layout of the customer's plant), the extent of any damage suffered and the state of efficiency of the device, so as to be able to promptly activate all restoration and maintenance measures, if necessary.
To make it even easier and more immediate to check the "health status" of each protection, the use of a standard color code has been implemented: Green indicates 100% efficiency; Yellow calls attention to the need for routine maintenance due to partial efficiency; and, finally, Red highlights the inefficiency of the Shock Protection that needs to be dealt with immediately by quarantining the area until it is fully restored.
Finally, the App also allows users to view maps of the premises of all Company-owned plants where S.M.A.R.T. Technology Shock Protectors are installed, for complete and immediate visibility into the security status of the entire group.
What additional pluses for your Clients and what are the possible future developments?
A very important aspect is the possibility for our Clients to interpret the data collected over time in order to improve their internal logistics. All the information transmitted by S.M.A.R.T. solutions, in fact, is "recorded" in a database, which makes it possible to keep track of which Protections are most impacted, how many times and with what energy level. Having, in fact, certified and tested all our products and evaluated their degree of resistance and reaction to impact, we can correlate the angle of inclination of the protection to a precise energy value, thus returning to the Customer additional and valuable details on the intensity of each impact. This is possible thanks to the advanced sensor installed on board, which records the position of the vertical axis of the S.M.A.R.T. STOMMPY Impact Protection (its zero axis) during installation and transmits any change in its inclination as a result of a collision.
In addition, STOMMPY, thanks to its organization and widespread presence in the territory, is able to offer its customers a turnkey service: from consulting and design of the most suitable Shock Protection system for the customer's needs, to installation with its own qualified technical staff, up to after-sales. In fact, the client can also decide to take advantage of our support for the maintenance of all products, with customized packages.
Finally, those who have recently purchased our solutions will be able to perform "upgrades" of the Shock Protectors to a 4.0 perspective by retrofitting them to which the new capsule with integrated S.M.A.R.T. technology will be applied. Meanwhile, in our R&D department, further developments of the system are being worked on intensively. Therefore, we hope to soon be present with new major upgrades aimed at further increasing the level of security and its interactivity in companies.
